In this enlightening TED talk, Mr. Tim Bernes-Lee, inventor of the World Wide Web, talks about how far we have gone since the Web was first invented and released to the world in the late eighties.

Since its launch in 1989, 40% of the world is now using the World Wide Web, allowing us to enjoy unlimited access to lots of freely available open data and connectivity. It is a conduit for free speech and connectivity, opening new possibilities for personal and professional gain.

“We love the fact that the Web is open, it allows us to talk, anybody can talk to anybody. It doesn’t matter who we are.”
-Tim Bernes-Lee

He also made sure to remind us about surveillance and security, that there may be people out there that might use and abuse these data.

“We can’t just use the Web; we have to worry about the underlying infrastructure of the whole thing. Is it in fact of a quality that we need?”
-Tim Bernes-Lee

Now with Web in it’s 25th year, Mr. Bernes-Lee invites us to think about what type of Web we want.

Go to www.webat25.org to find out more.

Wow! It now really looks like the tablet wars are spicing up which is really exciting. Amazon will let loose the Kindle Fire their answer to the Apple iPad, in November this year.

Now what could be better on the Kindle Fire than on the iPad I hear you asking? Well… From what I can see, not much.

It has a smaller screen, less memory, less battery life (and just these three are making me think it may not actually be worth getting one). I do admit though, I don’t have any tablet device right now, although I have been looking over the last few months, but cannot justify getting one until it has something that I will actually use on a day to day basis that I can’t really do with ALL my other Apple devices such as iPhone’s, MacBook Pro’s, AppleTV’s etc… and the list goes on.

BUT, in saying all this, when I first looked at the Kindle Fire, it actually got my interest purely because it was cheap, looks pretty good, and I can get pretty much everything on it I can on a iPad. The Kindle Fire also backs up everything on it to the Amazon cloud automatically via WiFi so you don’t loose all your data. No need to plug that baby in to a computer like every other Apple device

Mashable writer Lance Ulanoff does not think it will be very successful though.

“Will it beat the Apple iPad? Unlikely”, Mr Ulanoff said.

And you know what? I tend to agree with him. Apple sold over 28 million iPads from April 2010 to June 2011.

Yours in tablets (once again),
Lee.

Having a website is great for business. In fact these days, it’s probably one of the most important things to have. But, it’s absolutely vital that your website is fast. Why? So your users will stay there and not get frustrated by waiting for your site to load.

What’s the process behind the speed of using a website? I’ll explain it in a nutshell. Even though you may think your website is small; and you may run it on say, WordPress, this still uses a database. Databases are used on the majority of websites these days and they may run PHP, ASP etc. It’s this server scripting that will run at the server, produce the HTML, and send it back to the browser. Got it?

But what makes a server fast? First of all, you need a reliable web hosting provider. Then you need to be able to optimise your database to run as fast as possible. After all, if your site is run on a database, then this is being queried every page load (therefore it needs to sharpen its act up to keep up!).

Smashing Magazine has provided a great article on how to speed up your database.

Yours in making your website fast enough for your user by creating an optimised database,

You may or may not know this, but March was a big month for browsers. Three of the big four web browsers – Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome and Internet Explorer – all released their latest versions!

What they bring for us are improved standards compliance, support for all of the latest technologies including HTML5 and CSS3 and importantly, improved user interfaces, but most excitingly … speed improvements!

If you use the internet at all (and I assume you do if you are reading this), you should race to your favourite browsers website and play the update game as soon as possible.

In the wake of all of these updates, SmashingApps posted an infographic that details the history of web browsers. It shows their creation date and popularity. Take a look and see just how far we have in the 17 years of the web browser!
